The “first Slovenian poet” Valentin Vodnik (1758–1819) was not only the first author of a short autobiography in Slovenian language, but also a pioneer of Slovenian genealogical terminology. Today, Vodnik would be considered a Ljubljana resident because both his native Zgornja Šiška, where his father spent his childhood, and his mother’s native village of Vič became part of the city of Ljubljana in the first half of the twentieth century. Moreover, three of Vodnik’s four grandparents also originated from the area of what is Ljubljana today: aside from his maternal grandmother who originated from the outskirts of the neighbouring municipality of Medvode, his paternal grandfather came from the village of Šentjakob ob Savi, his paternal grandmother from Trata, and his maternal grandfather from Vič. In Vodnik’s days, of course, none of these relatives, including the poet himself, would have been regarded as residents of Ljubljana, but simply of Upper Carniola.
