Teaching about the Holocaust can also be carried out during a commemorative lesson (class meeting) in the week of the Holocaust Remembrance Day in January. When planning the commemorative lesson, we select sources that trigger students’ empathy towards the victims and understanding of the topic, while maintaining a respectful attitude towards Holocaust victims. In addition to documentary sources, we can also use literary sources with a historical backdrop, first-hand accounts, interviews, letters, diary entries, etc. Lately, teaching about the Holocaust through the personal stories of individuals is gaining ground. One such story is that of Miriam Steiner Aviezer, who described her experience of the Holocaust through the eyes of a child in the book Vojak z zlatimi gumbi (The Soldier with the Golden Buttons); she also included the memories of her peers. The commemorative lesson was based on listening to excerpts from an interview with Miriam Steiner Aviezer and reading excerpts from her book.
