<h2>Historical population censuses of Slovenia</h2>
 In the context of the <a href="/publikacije/?menuBottom=2" target="_blank">Research
 Infrastructure of Slovenian Historiography</a> activities, we have also been
 implementing the Slovenian population censuses project. The project has been carried
 out in close cooperation with the <a href="http://www.zal-lj.si/" target="_blank"
 >Historical Archives Ljubljana</a>, which keeps a large number of population
 censuses containing microdata about the respective population rates. This way, the
 censuses of the Ljubljana population are completely preserved (for 1830, 1857, 1869,
 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1921, 1928 and 1931), censuses for Idrija, Novo mesto,
 Škofja Loka and Vrhnika are relatively well preserved, while censuses for different
 rural municipalities are partly preserved. A large number of censuses was digitized
 with the help of <a href="https://familysearch.org/" target="_blank"
 >FamilySearch</a>.
 Some digitised censuses in the form of PDF publications are already available at the
 History of Slovenia – SIstory portal in the folder <a href="/11686/menu510"
 target="_blank">Slovenian population censuses 1830–1930</a>. The metadata for
 these publications can be searched for using the general SIstory search engine. The
 metadata does not include information on people, only on places (town, street and
 number) and the time when the census was carried out.
 Within the Population census project, we also transcribed all personal data of
 persons included in the original population lists. The transcription is being
 carried out using a tool for transcribing historical demographic data, which was
 developed as part of the Research Infrastructure of Slovenian Historiography
 activities (for more details on the tool <a
 href="http://cobiss6.izum.si/scripts/cobiss?command=DISPLAY&amp;base=99999&amp;rid=3712116&amp;fmt=11&amp;lani=si"
 target="_blank">see article</a>). The basic transcribed data (name, surname,
 year of birth, address and house number) is accessible via <a
 href="http://www.sistory.si/popis" target="_blank">special search engine that is
 integrated into the SIstory portal</a>. At the moment, the following population
 censuses are available in the tool for the transcription of historical demographic
 information:

 The transcription tool is freely accessible at <a href="http://sistory.si/admin"
 target="_blank">http://sistory.si/admin</a>. The interested users have to login
 before being granted access to the tool. It is recommended for each user to enter
 their full name and surname since their name will appear when citing a source. The
 registered users have the following rights and duties:
 <ul>
 <li>After the registration, every user initially acquires the status of an ordinary
 user. Ordinary users cannot see information about the already transcribed
 persons in the system, only the information they have transcribed by themselves.
 Consequently, they can only transcribe information about persons from units no
 one else has transcribed from yet. The transcribed data can then be exported as
 an XLS (Microsoft Excel) and XML file. After the user has (correctly) transcribe
 information on 300 persons, their status can be upgraded to the Advanced
 user.</li>
 <li>Advanced users see not only the information they transcribed by themselves but
 also the information entered by other users. At the same time, they acquire the
 right to correct all existing entries and the right to export the entire
 database.</li>
 <li>After exporting the complete information of a particular population census, the
 users can freely use the data for research purposes. When using and further
 processing the exported data, the user is obliged to indicate the address,
 source and all other users who participated in the transcription of the original
 data, which includes all advanced users who transcribed data on more than 300
 persons. The suggested source citation method is accessible at the census
 homepage.</li>
 <li>The user is not allowed to hand over the basic export data to any third parties.
 The user can freely process and use the exported data in line with their own
 research requirements. The newly edited data, in the creation of which the user
 has invested their own work, can be forwarded to third parties.</li>
 <li>When transcribing data from the census, the user is obliged to follow the
 transcription guidelines, which can be accessed from the census homepage or
 acquired from the census editor. If the user does not follow the instructions,
 the census editor can block their user account.</li>
 <li>The user must, as a general rule, transcribe the data exactly as
 displayed in the original. The user must carry out the normalization and
 interpretation of this data only after the originally transcribed data has been
 exported, with the exception of data that was initially adequately classified
 (gender, religion, family situation, nationality, language etc.). In such cases,
 the user should choose the adequate value from the drop-down menu. If they
 cannot find an adequate value, they should add a comment in the mojaOpomba
 (MyComment) field and notify the census editor, who can then add a new value to
 the drop-down menu.</li>
