The paper looks at the possibility of an indeterminate concept of history. Such a concept would
avoid present aprioristic as well as functionalistic historical orientations. By far the most influential
ones are namely those that arise from the presumption that the society is not solely interpretative.
While it is true that the knowledge about them is imperative, we do need to be aware that they
represent matrices of discourse that do not acknowledge any »isolated phenoena«; therefore they
cannot be precluded a priori.
