Brencelj, the first Slovene satirical newspaper (1869-1875 and 1877-1886), was published during
the period of increasing political freedom in the Habsburg monarchy and the growth of the Slovene
nationalistic movement in the 1860’s. It was edited by journalist, playwright and satirist Jakob
Ale{evec (1842-1901). Despite occasional difficulties, the newspaper was well received among its
readers. Its satirical texts and cartoons, which defended Janez Bleiweis and were aimed against
pro-German Slovenes, represent an important source for the research of Slovene culture and political
history.
