The article introduces the concept of authentic learning on the example of history classes using history sources and developing critical thinking skills. In authentic learning, learning problems are placed in a real-life context presented in the article as a simulation of history research work using primary sources. Their study allows for a number of possible explanations and not only a single one as is the case with secondary sources or the teacher’s explanation. Modern history textbooks include both primary and secondary sources. Copyrighted textbook material can be used in class as a secondary source along with primary sources. Using primary sources in authentic learning provides a greater insight into the subject matter, association, application and a better understanding of the material as well as mastering the skill of using history sources which includes critical thinking. Authentic learning can thus enable a more connected, useful and broader applicable history knowledge, which offers students a greater challenge and motivation
