The article points out the need for extreme caution when processing and providing access to archives that contain personaldata. The author presents the Slovenian legislation for this field which tends to be rather complicated and at times alsounharmonized. He stresses the need for the signing of the statement by which the users agree not to misuse personal dataincluded in the archives, especially sensitive personal data, or else be held criminally responsible. The legislation prevents suchmisuse by implementing the principle of data anonymization. Since it is impossible to follow this principle when providingarchives for research and publishing as this would entail the forging of the archives, it is necessary to anonymize researchresults. Also described in the article are some of the issues that the Slovenian archives are faced with when providing access toarchives that contain personal data.
