The article describes events Crelated to the Nazi confiscation of archives in Germany and in occupied territories before and during World War II. In 1945, a significant number of these archives were transferred from Germany to the Soviet Union, where they were re-discovered in 1990. The article presents discussions on archival restitution and describes how someof the archives were returned from Russia to the country of their origin. The article also attempts to answer the question why of archival restitution has been significantly more successful than the restitution of works of art and museum objects.
