Portolan Charts of the Mediterranean – an Example of a Medival Nautical Innovation

Description

Portolan charts (later also bound into atlases) with their graphic components and stylistic elements were a cartographic novelty at the end of the 13th century. They were the first maps to include a wind network and scale, which made it easier forusers to determine the distance from their destination and their sailing direction. In the Mediterranean, such charts were produced mostly in Venice and in the Balearic Island of Majorca. The article provides a detailed description of Majorcan portolan charts and atlases, their purpose and methods of compilation; it further describes their makers and users.

      • Portulanske karte, kasneje vezane tudi v atlase, so z grafičnimi komponentami in stilističnimi elementi predstavljale novost v kartografiji konec 13. stoletja. Bile so prvi zemljevidi, ki so bili opremljeni s kompasno mrežo in merilom, s katerima so uporabniki lažje določali oddaljenost od želenega kraja in smer plutja. Središči izdelave portulanskih kart Sredozemlja sta bili Benetke in balearski otok Majorka. Namen prispevka je podrobneje predstaviti portulanske karte in atlase, način izdelovanja, namen ter izdelovalce in uporabnike.

      • Die Portolankarten bedeuteten für das Alltagslebender Küstenbewohner des Mittelalters und derNeuzeit eine bessere Kenntnis ihrer Umwelt, dieErlangung neuer Erkenntnisse auf dem Gebiet derWissenschaft und eine dichtere Migration derMenschen im gesamten mediterranen Becken. DieEntstehungszeit der Karten (14. Jahrhundert) fälltmit der Zeit der Einführung des Kompasses aus derarabischen Welt und mit den Anfängen der Renaissancezusammen, wobei für die Entstehung derPortolane die Wiedergeburt antiker Wissenschaften,genauer die Erkenntnisse der beiden Geographenund Astronomen Ptolemäus und Marinus vonTyrus, von großer Bedeutung sind.Die Portolankarten erlangten ihre Bedeutungdurch zwei neue Elemente, die noch heute, in einerzwar ausgefeilten Form, die Hauptbestandteile allerSeekarten bilden: durch die Windrose und denMaßstab. Sie entstanden als skizzenhafte Beschreibungenfür die Seeleute während der Seefahrt imMittelmeer und wurden bald zu einem unverzichtbarenHilfsmittel für die Schifffahrt, sodass man siemassenweise herzustellen begann. Daraus entwickeltesich die Kartographie, wobei die Seekartenzu einem marktgängigen Produkt und Statussymbolder höheren Schichten wurden. Die wichtigstenZentren der Ausarbeitung der Portolane warengleichzeitig auch die wirtschaftlich mächtigstenZentren des Mittelmeers, nämlich Mallorca, diegrößte Insel der Balearen, und die Apenninenhalbinselbzw. Venedig, Genua und Pisa, die auch inder arabischen Welt bekannt waren.In dem Beitrag werden die verschiedenen Hypothesenüber Entstehung, Bedeutung und Zweck derPortolankarten präsentiert und zugleich die verschiedenenTheorien, mit denen die genanntenHypothesen seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bisheute untermauert werden, einer kritischen Beurteilungunterzogen.
