Opis

      • After the 1968 protests, the League of Communists of Yugoslavia started to confront a different kind of intellectual groups, like the Praxis group, and students’ movements. By the end of the 1973 battle was carried on at the Faculty of Arts in Belgrade, where the Party wanted to expel eight Praxis professors. This initiative was opposed by the students of Faculty of Arts in Belgrade, backed by the students from Faculty of Arts in Zagreb and Ljubljana. By the end of January 1974, the students of Faculty of Arts from Belgrade, Zagreb, and Ljubljana met in Ljubljana and accepted a document named the Draft resolution of the Student Union of the Faculties of Arts of Belgrade, Ljubljana, and Zagreb. The latter document included a harsh critique from the “new left” regarding social and economic conditions of the country. The regime accused students of enemy activities and after the interrogations took them to the trial. The repressive body was more severe in Belgrade than in Zagreb or Ljubljana. However, a night before the trail the Slovene secret police took the defendants from Zagreb and Belgrade to a secret house, where they were pressured to plead guilty but were not beaten. All sixth students were found guilty by the court and were sentenced to 10 months in prison. After the appeal and due to the international situation, the sentence was reduced to sixth and eight months in prison with a two-year probationary period. In the end, none of the sixth students spent time in jail. This case was an example of how the LCY will treat the critique coming from outside of the Party.
