Hallerstein je mimo astronomije sodeloval še pri raziskovanju elektrike, ki je utemeljilo Voltovo odkritje elektroforja in baterije. Ti izumi so omogočili razvoj dolgotrajnega opazovanja električnih pojavov namesto dotedanje hitre razelektritve leydenskih steklenic. Znanstveniki so potrebovali takšne novosti, da bi razumeli potek priljubljenih razelektritev. Manj uporabne jezuitske električne in vakuumske naprave v Pekingu niso požele toliko zanimanja kot astronomija. Raziskovanje vakuuma in še posebej elektrike je lažje našlo svoj prostor med japonskimi uporabniki nizozemske znanosti, saj je bila leydenska steklenica nizozemski izum.

      • Besides Astronomy Hallerstein also participated in the electricity research which paved the way for Volta’s discovery of the electrophorus and the pile. Those inventions enabled the long-duration observations instead of up-to-date quick discharges of the Leyden bottles. The scientists needed the novelties of that kind to understand the fashionable discharges of those days. Less useful electrical and vacuum equipment did not get so much attention in Beijing as the astronomy. The Japanese users of the Dutch science accepted better the vacuum research and especially electrical equipment because at least the Leyden bottle was essentially Dutch discovery.
