The format of the Chronicle of Poor Clares is 35x20 cm. The book is bound in black leather and
has beautiful relief ornaments. It is written in German and Gothic. The term "chronicle" can be
misleading since one might expect to find (as in the Chronicle of Marenberg Dominicans) records of
all the important events that took place in the convent, Škofja Loka and its surroundings, but there
are mostly notes on when the nuns entered the convent and when they died. Very little is written about
secular andfor the historiography more important events that happened in the period, covered by the
Chronicle. The first entries in the Chronicle date back to 1683, but the book already describes the
events from the year 1633 onwards, so basically it covers the 17th and 18th centuries. The first part of
the Chronicle encompasses pages 5-92 and basically represents a notebook with the dates when
candidates were received into a convent and took their vows. The second part of the book (pages 7-
88) is a necrology or a death certificate book with the dates (and sometimes also the causes) of death
of the Loka Clares and comments on their greatest achievements in the convent. The entries in the
Chronicle and death certificate book continued also after the year 1782, when the convent was
dissolved, for Loka Ursulines used it to record their dates of entry into convent and the notes of the
nuns' deaths till 1891. The Clares Chronicle is also important because it includes one of the rare
pictures of a dress, which was worn by the Clares in Slovenia in the past. On the first page inside the
Clares Chronicle there is the oldest known picture of the Loke convent with the church.
The paper describes the first part of the Loka Clares Chronicle, which contains the entries of nuns
in the convent in the 17th century. It presents an important historical source from private archive
material, which is kept in the Archives of the Ursuline Convent in Sv. Duh pri Škofji Loki.
