Great Britain used to be one of the leading forces in Europe and in the world. As such, it kept a vigilant
eye on the events and activities going on in Europe at that time. Great Britain hadfound Slovenes
interesting only as the inhabitants of Europe, emphasis being laid on the fact that they were the
inhabitants of Yugoslavia more than the inhabitants of Austria. There are a number of documents,
concerning Slovenes in various and different aspects. The materials had been used and researched by
many Slovene scientists as well as other research experts. Above all, those had been the documents
which had been, to a high degree, considered meaningful and significant for the political history,
while on the other hand, much less interest had been taken in the minute descriptions of the Slovene
country and the Slovene people; the documents had been written down at various occasions and in
different periods of Slovene history by the observers, who were not important, but rather trivial with
regard to the politics of that period. But nevertheless, those documents are, apartfrom being interesting,
also considerably useful. On one hand, they have been drawing our attention to the fact that the
documents have to be used with a great deal of precaution, restraint and consideration, and that we
should be aware of the fact, that the knowledge of their authors about the circumstances of the described
period, was to a considerable extent subjective, in a number of aspects superficial, and very often
full of prejudice. On the other hand, they have been enticing us to a closer observation and reflection
concerning those issues.
