The author, in this paper, depicts the history of the Celje National hall, which was, prior to 1914, the arena of Slovene political, economic, cultural and sociable life in the town. The National Hall construction was begun already in 1891, by purchase of the plot in the city centre, to be finished by 1897. Further, the author finds that during the First World War the hall of the National Hall served as a military hospital, after the turn-about the National Hall loses its exclusive national expression and became in parity equal to other buildings in the town, though a veriety events continued to evolve in the National Hall. With the German occupation the National Hall lived a sad fate, as all architectural details and embelishments were removed and the Styrian Homeland Union was moved in, to be followed in Spring 1945 by an air bomb of the Anglo-American forces destroying the western tract of the National Hall, which was later rebuilt without taking into consideration the basic architectural elements. With a »new« appearnce and damages, National Hall existed after the Liberation. It housed both cultural institutions and administrative bodies of the new authorities. The City Municipality and the Administrative Unit Celje still have its seats in the National Hall. The impoverished architectural appearance of the National hall was begun initially to be renovated in 1976, in the second stage of the National Hall renovation (1988) the corner part of the building was dealt with, returning it its old appearance, in 1991, lastly, the exterior was completely renovated, retuning it its original appearance.
