Description

King Henry IV gave Carniola to the Aquileian church and its patriarchs, first (temporarily) in 1077 and for the second time in 1093. Thus the patriarchs of Aquileia became margraves of Carniola. The study treats the Aquileian patriarchs as the bearers of the margravial authority in Carniola. Their authority was more than actual, since the patriarchs passed it on to their deputies as a hereditary feud. This authority of the Aquileian patriarchs definitely came to its end in 1282, when King Rudolf I gave Austria, Styria and Carniola as a state feud to his sons.
