This paper presents a thorough review of the relevant literature addressing the increasingly pressing issue of violence against women in politics on social media. Despite its increasing prevalence and dangerous consequences for those affected, this form of violence is still underresearched,
especially in Slovenia. For this reason, a detailed and in-depth literature review
is crucial to initiate research in the Slovenian socio-political context.
The paper presents eight key studies analysing the phenomenon of violence against women in
politics on social media, employing a mixed-methods approach. Using the latter, researchers
combine methods and techniques traditionally used in the social sciences with modern and
innovative data science methods. The detailed analysis of these studies focuses primarily
on the aims and purposes, data collection techniques, research methods employed, and the
main findings of the analysed research. Using mixed-methods research, it is possible to successfully
integrate social science and data science methods, allowing for precise, in-depth and
comprehensive analyses that yield relevant results.
Thus, the relevance of social science research on social media and political discourses as
they unfold in these digital spaces is emphasised. Furthermore, the importance of studying
violence against women in politics is underlined, which, as a contemporary form of violence,
not only threatens women’s political presence and representation but also poses a significant
challenge to democratic values and gender equality – not only in politics but in all areas of
society.
