Also in Slovenia, the knowledge of the characteristics and attributes of floods and the interdisciplinary approach to flood research have shaped the concept of the so-called flood risk management, which encompasses a range of measures and activities to adapt to floods in the broadest sense. Flood risk management can focus on reducing flood risk, reducing the existing vulnerabilities, or preventing the introduction of damaging potentials into flood hazard areas. The means to achieve this include preventive and curative measures and activities, which should be coordinated at the level of the entire river basin with the participation of all those affected. The modern concept of flood protection is multifaceted and includes various elements of flood risk management, such as appropriate spatial planning, afforestation, prevention of inundation, preparedness and proper response to hazards, education of the population on flood risks and responses, prohibition of building in flood hazard areas, etc. The present contribution will explore the practical implementation of these principles, highlighting the most urgent flood hazard areas and the response of the population to the concept of flood risk management.
