Description
The paper focuses on the Italian ethnic community in what was first named the People's Republic, and then the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, between 1954 and 1990. Despite mass emigration of its members, this small ommunity was one of the best legally protected minorities in Europe. Yet it was on the verge of extinction, threatened to become assimilated with the majority nation. Such a community, treated as an enclave, is namely able to regenerate itself only if it meets certain conditions: some of these are the natality, an adequate number of members, and the degree of their concentration in the area where they live. These were the conditions that the Italian minority could not meet.
