Viewed from the perspective of historiography, Slovene national interests were manifested in
different ways. Depending upon the general social, political, and economic circumstances,
each period brought forth its own unique aspects. The prevailing characteristic of the period
from the mid-1850s to the Second World War was the emphasis on the »national (Slovene)
aspect.« Its principal objective was economic autonomy of Slovenia. There were, however,
occasional digressions and discrepancies in the process of defining Slovene national economic
interest.
