While under capitalism the ideal woman was supposed to be a mother and a housewife only, under socialism she was also expected to have a job and be politically active. Socialist legislation did give women equal position in the private and public spheres, however, it turned out that the deeply rooted traditional views on the roles of women as mothers and housewives could not be done away with, not even after decades of socialism.
