Around 1360 the counts of Celje took the advantage of the then existing feudal relationships, because they were strong enough in relationship toward the Habsburg seniors. As vassals of the Habsburg rulers the counts of Celje took from the Aquillean ecclesiatic-state patriarchy its estates in Carniola and in northern Istria (Postojna etc.). Most of the lands were given to them by the seniors into a permanent fief. With this the broader areas of Slovenia, approximately two thirds were in a unified management, especially because the »counts from Celje, Ortenburg and Zagorje« were closely linked with the kinsmen, counts from Gorica, who became dukes. Starting from this position and with the alliance of kinsmen, from Luxemburg the counts from Celje began a quiet resistence against the Habsburgs, whereas against the counts of Bamberk and their lands they began a real, although unsuccessful offensive, especially for the city Villach (Beljak) in Carinthia. In such circumstances the counts from Celje were nevertheless increasingly strengthening their state rights during the years 1425—1430.
