In 1875 the first city school for girls was established in Ljubljana and it was located in the old building that had been used for public entertainment and dances. At first it comprised only four years of elementary school in 1882 it was prolonged to five years, in 1887 to six, in 1889 to seven and in 1890 to eight years. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1918 it was reorganized into an elementary school which lasted for five years and a civic (middle) school which lasted for three years. In 1901 the school acquired its own building at the St. Jacob’s square. The headmistresses of the school were by 1918: Marija Krašner, Julija Moss, Emilija Gusl, and Marija Marout. All of them, as well as teachers of the school, took a lively part in the then school and social life.
