Description
The first Slovene monetary institution was established already in 1802, but the advertisement for competition of the design for the saving bank was issued only in 1902. The jury decided to accept the design made by Josip Vancaš, an architect from Sarajevo, althoughit could not award him the highest prize because the condition of anonymity had been broken. The architect had to’ change his design several times because the governors could not form a unified opinion about the business premises. Vancaš’s building is on the border between historicism and secessionistic style, then in vogue, but it belongs to those buildings which introduced in Ljubljana after the earthquake the dimensions of a big city. After the completion of this project Vancaš was asked to do various other designs, churches as well as secular buildings, with which this architect proved his skilled but eclectic approach to the art of building.
