A large part of the study is devoted to the educational conditions and the to resistance and struggle of the Slovenes in Prekmurje against the linguistic Hungarianization before 1918. The author substantiates the claim made at the outset that the Slovenes of Prekmurje were among all the Slovenes those who were least prepared for becoming politically united with other Slovenes in the newly founded Yugoslav state, explains the reasons for such a state of affairs and the reason why a more strong military action for liberation was not taken. The main obstacle why the Slovene general Maister could not take military possession of Prekmurje (as he had liberated Maribor and the Styrian Podravje), and why the legionaries from Prekmurje, over 500 of them gathered in May 1919 in Ljutomer, could not start action was the armstice concluded on Nov. 13th, 1918, in Belgrade between the Supreme Command of the Eastern Allied Forces (Gen. d’Espe- rey!) and Karoly’s Hungarian government. The Hungarians interpreted this armstice as a right recognized to them by the Allies that they may use military forces against any unauthorized changing of the Hungarian border, vzhereas the Supreme Command of the Serbian forces, the Drava Division with its seat in Ljubljana, and the French military mission in Yugoslavia also felt obliged to observe the armstice. The final decision was thus made only at the Paris Peace Treaty.
