The author treats in this article individual caritative activity in the late Middle Ages at Piran. Most frequent causes for it were care for one’s soul and for forgiveness of sins according to the myth of purgatory and man’s striving after “peaceful death’’. As regards its forms this caritative activity was generally unorganized, and it is mainly presented on the basis of wills. Since 1430 an organized form of caritative activity can also be noticed for the benefit of the city hospital. Numerous Slavs, who have migrated to Piran from Slovenian and Croatian provinces, also take part in this aspect of life then.
