Description
The Town Museum at Kamnik has two wooden statues representing two sitting and sleeping warriors. The statues, which form part of the composition of Christ’s Resurrection, were found at Mekinje (in an old convent of the Carmelites, which, from 1902 on belonged to the Ursuline Order). They appear to be of Italian origin and probably came to Mekinje only later. They date from about the year 1560 and are the only laterenaissance sculptures in which traces of Michelangelo’s art can be seen (e. g. the statues representing Lorenzo and Giuliano Medici at the Capeila Medici in Florence). As its parallel in style, one can mention Leone Leoni’s sitting statues of the Gian Giacome Medici tombstone in the Cathedral of Milan.
