Description

There were eight monasteries on the insular part of Koper. Six of thern were friaries, two nunneries. The older nunnery of St. Clare has recently celebrated the seven hundredth anniversary of itsfoundation. The sisters of St. Claire devoted special concern to prayer and contemplation but theyeducated (mainly girls ol nobility) as well. Although they led a secluded life in spiritual sense (seclusion),the numerous preserved deeds of sale and lease contracts offer anticipations on a vivacious economic lifeof the convent. Since the dismissal of the convent in 1806, the building has constantly been changing itspurpose. During the renovation of a part ol the convent complex in 1989, graves were discovered in thechurch of St. Clare, and different phases ol buying on that space were researched. The seat of theeconomic-business secondary school is at present in the cloisters of the former convent, and in thebuilding of the aracade yard and the church the seat of the Pokrajinski arhiv Koper.

Čeprav so v duhovnem smislu živele odmaknjeno življenje (klavzura), pa številne ohranjene kupoprodajne in zakupne pogodbe dajo slutiti živahno gospodarsko življenje samostana. Po razpustitvi samostana leta1806 je poslopje vseskozi spreminjalo namembnost. Med zadnja obnovo dela samostanskega kompleksa so bili leta 1989 v cerkvi sv. Klare odkriti grobovi in raziskane različne faze pokopavanja na tem prostoru.V križnem hodniku nekdanjega samostana je sedaj sedež Srednje ekonomsko-poslovne šole, v poslopjuarkadnega dvorišča in cerkve pa Pokrajinskega arhiva Koper.
