The article presents a survey of researches that have been completed so far as well as their results; moreover, the author also calls the readers attention to the questions that are still waiting for an adequate scientific treatment, in the first place an analysis of migrations to Ljubljana in the period which is the subject of the present study as well as the social structure of the total population of Ljubljana. So far researches have been done only as regards those strata of the Ljubljana population out of which came the members of labour societies, that is artisans, business and home-industry hands, workers and day-labourers.
