The ownership of the Šentpavel monastery of the propriety both in Maribor and its wider surroundings conditioned certain relations with the town of Maribor and its townspeople, with provincial-princely minesterialists — the gentlepeople of Maribor, and with the monastery vassals from Melje. These relations were, as far as one can see from the preserved documents, lively and polite; from the second half of the 15th century onward, with ever more frequent Turkish raids which demanded cooperation in defending the country and the town also on the side of privileged classes and institutions (one of which was the Abbey of Šentpavel), the relations with Maribor grew to a certain degree tenser.
