The article discusses the public clocks of Ljubljana from 1548 till approximately 1700; the “big pubUc clok” on the tower of the pipers of the Ljubljana castle is described in detail. A survey of the researches that have been done so far is based on the collected sources in ZALJ where there is a continuous list of the clockmakers of domestic and foreign origin from the year 1548 onward in the archives of the Ljubljana Town Hall. As it is evident from the article, there existed in Ljubljana in the 16th century also clocks on church towers; therefore the author calls attention to the so-far unresearched church archives which would certainly clarify even better the activity of this trade. The last part of the article presents the house clock made by a Ljubljana clockmaker; his activity can be proved at the end of the 17th century by the archives. Unfortunately, the only artefact with the signature of this clockmaker is nowadays in private ownership in Rome. With this clock which points to a relatively high level of this respectable trade in Ljubljana at the end of the 17th century we got at least a partly affirmative proof that apart from making public clocks the clockmakers of Ljubljana dealt also with house clocks.
