All hotels originated from inns. Hotels in the 18th century were smaller, less luxurious than those in the 20th century. The oldest hotel in Ljubljana was BideIman on Ciril-Metod Square (1736). There were two more hotels in the 18th century, Zlata zvezda in Wolfova street, and Slon. In 1848 there were seven hoteIs, at the end of the 19th century five, in 1907 ten, again seven before World War II. Today the hotel Slon is the one with longest tradition, Union is the only from before World War Il that still exists. Most prestigious of its time was certainly Malič, for more ordinary guests Bavarski dvor, Union and Miklič were at their start the most splendid, BideIman and Avstrijski dvor hosted emperors, Avstrijski cesar hosted our famous poets, while Štrukelj is fatally connected with Cankar. The hotels of Ljubljana were also important for their social and representative role.
