The paper presents the development of administrative and political regulations on the territory of the former big commune of Maribor from 1850 to 1983. The author gives a detailed description of the development of basic units — from neighbourhoods in the time of Austro-Hungarian empire, political communes in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, revolutionary organs of political power-committees of the Liberation Front — during the time of WWII, people’s and national liberation committees in Tito’s Yugoslavia. Along with these the author describes the town and the role of Maribor as the seat of different state and legal organs.
