At the beginning of the discussed period travelling was much similar to the medieval one. Means of
transport, lodgings for the night, dangers along the journeys - all was the same as some centuries before
that time. Until the 18th century, when they began building roads, travellers mainly walked and rode.
With the development of roads the postal coach came into use; until the introduction of the railway the
post held monopoly over transport of passengers. All kinds of travellers were coming to Ljubljana, from
tradesmen craftsmen to "philosophical travellers" (the English), and adventurers, from the 18th century
on already tourists. Many of them left their memoirs, travel diaries and other notes, in which they
described the image of Ljubljana, its inhabitants, events.
