Description
The author treats the statements found in literature about the origins of the paper-mill in Radeče. With research into the history of the Žabnik ironworks near Radeče we prove that this paper-mill was not founded in 1670 as is stated in the literature. Examining birth registers we came close to the foundation year of the Radeče paper-mill and also found out, reading a note from 5th September 1725, that there had already been a paper-mill (Papyri extructura) in the place of the ancient iron-works. There is a very interesting note in the birth register for the year 1740 — the parish priest wrote the Slovene name »Papirnica« (Poperniza), meaning the paper-mill and also the name of the village. Father Gruber, professor of mechanics at the Ljubljana Jesuit College, was making experiments with blue Holland sugar paper and with paper made of sawdust in the Radeče paper-mill in 1769. The ancient Fužina, later Papirnica, is today part of the village Njivice near Radeče.
