Vladimir Štolfa was born on December 14th 1904 in Sežana. In 1924 he entered the Naval Academy inKotor. After his studies Štolfa employed himself in the largest Yugoslav ship company of that time, the Yugoslav Lloyd. As acadet and later as a deck officer he sailed on cargo steam ships Istok, Tomislav, Nemanja and Carica Milica, and on the then largest Yugoslav passenger ship Kraljica Marija. During thatperiod he regularly corresponded with his sisters Vida and Dana; in the last period he most frequently wrote to his father. The preserved letters are a rich source of information about VladiImir's life during thetime of sea voyages, about ships and their routes, about the manner of life of sailors on ships, about seeing foreign places and people, and about the author's contemplation and view upon hic and the surroundjngs.
