The so called School National Protection Society of St. Cyril and Methodius was founded in 1885; it helped and supported the Slovene private kindergartens and primary schools where the Slovenes — owing to the unfavourable attitude of the authorities of whatever level — could not open their own public primary schools and kindergartens. An important source of finances for these activities was the branches of the Society, which numbered 284 in the Hapsburg territory in 1913. Here we present the Upper Carniola branches of the Society, the time of their establishment, the main features of their activities and the professional organization and structure of their committees. The survey of the branches, which is particularly interesting for local history, contains 34 out ofthe 118 branches established in the then territory of Upper Carniola in the period from 1885 to 1918.
