On the basis of the records of the “Great French Orient“, kept in the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the article deals with the foundation and membership of the French Freemasons’ Lodge in Ljubljana (1811—13). The author calls attention to the fact that the Lodge was established by the French officers and officials to popularize freemasonry in Ljubljana and Carniola (Kranjska), to provide the French freemasons with “refuge“ at Ljubljana’s “Orient“, and, at the same time, to encourage love towards France and Napoleon. The number of the native members mentioned, namely 15, was much smaller than the number known to the Austrian police. And thus the name of Valentin Vodnik, for example, is not to be found there.
