On the basis of the archive material (especially the funds of the trade-union) the article shows that before the World War II and also afterwards the house-maids mostly came from the country. To most of them this ob was only the first step into other professions. The socialist authorities aproved of this profession even though they were aware of the fact that only certain classes could afford the house-maids. Until the sixties the house-maids were very wanted: the demand was greater than the bid. Their legal protection and union organization were arranged by the authorities. After the sixties their number decreased along with the development of social and personal standard.
