The only monograph to date on the history ofthe Tolmin region was written by Simon Rutar in 1882. Over the hundred years and more traversed since then by Slovenian history writing, our knowledge and understanding of our own past has changed considerably. Regrettably, it does not seem likely that a new historical monograph on the Tolmin region will be written for some time to come. For this reason, the article draws the reader’s attention to certain sections of Rutar’s publication which are not consistent with contemporary opinions on the subject. At the same time, the author acquaints us with the present day level ofknowledge about certain issues.
