Research work has recently commenced on the fortified high- altitude settlement of Tonovcev Grad near Kobarid. The remains of numerous brick and stone buildings and early Christian churches have been unearthed at the top of this steep hill, encircled by fortress walls. The archaeological findings place the settlement in the time around the 5th and 6th century. Some elements, however, indicate that a settlement existed here already in the the late La Tene period, while other finds date back to the 9th century. Most of the predominantly one-room and three-room buildings are situated in the slightly lower level ofthe hilltop at the entrance to the fortress walls, above which lies a smaller rocky outcrop with the remains of churches. A number of buildings were nestled against the fortress wall, strengthening it in the most easily accessible sections. The diversity of artefacts and the architecture ofthe buildings preserved on the surface, place Tonovcev Grad among the most important and best preserved late antiquity highaltitude fortresses in the East-Alpine region.
