On the morning of Easter Sunday, April 14, 1895, Ljubljana was struck by a catastrophic earthquake. Undoubtedly, this greatly influenced the modernisation of the town carried out during the mayoralty of Ivan Hribar (1896-1910). As much had already been written about the earthquake, we decided rather to mark the 100th anniversary of the catastrophe with the publication of a translation of a feuilleton, which was published on May 7 1895 in the Frankfurter Zeitung und Handelsblatt by Dr. Heinrich Kanner. In his feuilleton, under the illustrative title of “A Buttressed City" ("gestützte" Stadt), Dr. Kanner takes us on a descriptive journey into the everyday life of the inhabitants of Ljubljana of the time, and gives a detailed account of the horrible days immediately after the great disaster that struck Ljubljana that Easter.
