From the middle ofthe 19th century till the end of World War П, many inhabitants of the Prekmuije region were forced to seek additional sources of income in the form of seasonal work abroad. The stream of Prekmuije seasonal workers stopped for almost twenty years after the Second World War, but picked up again and grew even stronger in the sixties. (Seasonal work done by workers from Prekmuije in Austria, Switzerland and Germany is widespread also today.) Through their work abroad, the Prekmuije workers came into contact with new and more modem cultural achievements, which they made efforts to introduce into their domestic environment. Changes in eating habits, the style of living, and clothing, as well as the relatively quick acceptance of technological innovations, can therefore also be seen as a result of the seasonal work done abroad by inhabitants ofthe Prekmuije region.
