Description
As a result ofthe improvements made in the educational legislation and the educational system as a whole, as well as the growth ofthe population, the number of children who attended primary and Sunday schools in Celje grew constantly in the period from 1796 to 1916. It is interesting to note that the number of girls attending primary schools was fairly small until the 1869 School Act was adopted, and that boys formed the bulk ofthe pupils in the regular primary schools, while girls made up the majority in the first few grades of Sunday school. A comparison between the children who attended school and those who went to Sunday school shows that the girls (who mostly attended only the first two grades) were younger than the boys, while amongst the children who went to Sunday school, the girls were slightly older.
