Description
The construction of University Medical Centre started in 1966. However, Ljubljana had a hospital before it. In 1786, Joseph II. advocated for the establishment of a hospital in Ljubljana and the Civil Hospital was established. After the French departed in 1813, the hospital was first supervised by the municipality, and after 1849 by the province of Carniola. In 1865, the pediatric hospital in Poljane was opened, but it was too small, therefore the provincial parliament adopted a decision on the construction of the new Provincial hospital which was built in 1895. During both wars, it was brought under Ljubljana municipal administration. The construction of the main building of Medical Centre did not begin before 1966, it lasted for 10 years and encountered many difficulties, namely those related to financing, education, spending investment money, unwillingness of municipalities to contribute, municipality of Upper Carniola was especially resistant on the grounds of having to maintain and develop hospital in Jesenice. The provision of foreign exchange for the acquisition of equipment was also problematic. Formal opening took place on November 29th, 1975. Problems also arose during the construction of the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana. Technical documentation of the Pre-clinic Institutes was created in 1973. In 1972, the consents for the adaptation were given and investment programs were prepared for the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana, Murska Sobota General Hospital, Nova Gorica General Hospital, and Maribor General Hospital. The year 1972 was a turning point for co-financing hospitals in Slovenia from national budget funds.
