In the period at hand and in conditions marked by the reduction of food expenditures up to 1980, Slovene households increased the consumption of most groups of agricultural produce and foodstuffs; the consumption of less healthy foods decreased and, concurrently, the structure of diet improved. With the deepening crisis at the turn of the decade and in the 1980s the food expenses started to grow in the structure of the cost of living; the structure of food itself gradually started to deteriorate with the switch to cheaper foods, particularly those rich in carbohydrates.
