The soldiers who completed their military service in the Austro-Hungarian army brought home to the Upper Sava valley at the beginning of the 20th century skis, which they were given as a reward for good skiing. But we can trace begginings of contemporary skiing on Slovene territory long before on the edge of Trnovski gozd in Dol (1888) and at the Snežnik castle near Lož (1891). There are material evidence on that In the first case the skiing teacher was Edmund Cibej (1861-1954) from Vipava, and in the second the manager of the forestry administration at the Snežnik castle a forestry expert Etbin Henrik Schollmayer (1860-1930). Besides the fact that Schollmayer introduced skis among foresters and hunters he also enraptured the castle nobility, founded the first skiing club on Slovene territory and wrote the first handbook for skiing (1893). It is our task to describe in detail the events at the Snežnik estate of the Schönbrug-Waldenburg family at the end of the 19th century and to estimnate the value of those events for Slovenia and for skiing.
