The Protestant civil register of Ljubljana (1578–1596) is considered the oldest civil register in the continental part of the present-day Slovenia. The register was bestowed upon the (Protestant) church by Markus Stettner ( Junior), a city councillor in Ljubljana. It is composed of several different parchment sheets and bound in brown leather. At the time of its origin it comprised 324 folios divided into four chapters: registers of baptisms, marriages, and deaths, and a list of communicants. Only a good sixth of the entire register has been preserved to date, i.e. a portion of the list of communicants and a portion of the death register. Although incomplete, the preserved fragment offers a multitude of data from the second half of the 16th century on persons that lived and worked mostly in Ljubljana, on their family relations, occupations, social status, etc., and is comparable to the preserved Protestant civil registers in Graz/Gradec and Klagenfurt/Celovec.
