This article discusses the emergence of the Shelter for the protection of small children (Kleinkinder Bewahranstalt) in Ljubljana in 1834 and its subsequent activities. Shelter can be seen as a forerunner of the organized kindergartens in Slovenian territory. It was characterized by paternalistic and authoritarian upbringing. The concept and the idea to establish such a society in Carniola came from abroad. The basic task of the shelter was to educate children in prayer and obedience. From later founded kindergartens which were created by the pedagogical model of Fröbel, shelters differed by the pedagogical approach, the internal organization and the gender composition of the teaching staff.
