Based on pictorial and written sources as well as surviving pieces, this study is the first comprehensive sweep of the evolution of furniture specially designed for children, that has been made and used since the Middle Ages in Slovenia. Cradles and cribs, little chairs and benches, little tables and desks, wardrobes and sets of nursery furniture, as well as (pre)school furniture, all reflect the ever-changing attitude in our society towards the child in general, the notion of childhood, the upbringing and education, in addition to the history of home and public space furnishings. A number of Slovenian and foreign manufacturers are mentioned, as well as the choice of furniture materials and manufacturing techniques across the centuries.
