Sergij Vilfan was born on the 5th of April 1919 in Trieste. In 1941 he completed his studies of law in Ljubljana and a year later took his doctoral degree. Until 1950 he practised various juridical jobs. From 1952 to 1972 he was headmaster of the City Archive in Ljubljana. He is since 1970 regular professor for law history from the Middle Ages on at the Faculty of law in Ljubljana.
His work in the City Archive is connected with publishing treatises from the field of archivistics. Most important are his researches into the history of law: The Law History of Slovenes from the Settlement to the Break of the Old Yugoslavia (1961), published as well in 1968 in German (Rechtsgeschichte der Slowenen bis zum Jahre 1941). To be mentioned are his contributions from economic and social history, in which he mainly dealed with measures and money. Vilfan is still active in various organisations and societies. Since 1983 he is fellow of the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts, corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1985) and the Vienna Academy of Sciences (1988).
